Laura Michelle Wheeler
Training and Engagement Coordinator
At In STEPPS, Laura Wheeler is responsible for coordinating the training, engagement and retention programs for all new employees, particularly in their first six months at the company. Laura has spent more than 25 years in autism and related fields, including working in education and disability services, corporate human resources, nonprofit and higher education, where she focused on donor and volunteer services. Laura has a bachelor’s in recreation administration, with specialization in therapeutic recreation, and a minor in psychology, from California State University, Chico.

Before working at In STEPPS, what was the most unusual or interesting job you had?
Volunteer coordinator at the Sonoma County Humane Society – I recruited cat cuddlers and puppy pals to volunteer at the shelter.
Where is your favorite place in the world?
Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
Developing the Employee Connection and Engagement Program, especially the new Peer Mentor Program, which pairs experienced therapist mentors with new therapists as they learn and grow in their first few months.
What’s your most prized possession?
A one-of-a-kind glass sculpture from New Zealand
How do you spend your weekends?
With my husband and two cats, reading, listening to music and going to the beach or Disneyland.
